A Record of Your Routine
Memory is a surprisingly unreliable witness when it comes to daily skincare. Without a written ledger, it is easy to forget whether you applied your retinoid yesterday evening, when you first opened your vitamin C bottle, or whether seasonal central heating coincided with dry patches.
Important Scope Note: A routine tracker is an organizational habit log—never a medical or diagnostic instrument. Persistent pain, cystic noduloulcerative acne, Sudden rashes, or suspected allergic contact dermatitis require direct evaluation by a board-certified dermatologist.

Order of Application: Viscosity & Vehicle Rule
When you use three or four products in a single session, layer them from thinnest water-based vehicle to richest oil/occlusive vehicle—with two deliberate exceptions:
-
Damp Skin vs. Dry Skin Timing Apply humectant serums and plain moisturizers onto slightly damp skin within 60 seconds of cleansing to trap surface water. Conversely, wait 10–15 minutes for skin to dry completely before applying retinoids or low-pH acids, as damp skin increases percutaneous penetration and stinging.
-
Retinoid Buffering ("Open" or "Sandwich") For beginners, applying a thin layer of plain ceramide lotion before your retinoid acts as a diffusion buffer that significantly reduces flaking without neutralizing retinoid efficacy.
-
Sunscreen is Always the Final Morning Film Sunscreens work by forming a continuous, uniform polymer film across the micro-topography of your skin. Never mix moisturizer or foundation drops into your sunscreen in your palm, and wait 5 minutes before applying makeup on top.
Figure 4.2 — Keeping sunscreen as an undisturbed final morning layer preserves its rated SPF film integrity.
The 4-Night Structured Cadence vs. Ad-Hoc Application
If you wish to incorporate both an exfoliant and a retinoid without overwhelming your barrier, use a structured 4-night repeating rotation (often referred to as cycling):
-
Night 1: Gentle Keratolytic Night Cleanse, pat dry, apply a single AHA or BHA product, and top with your plain barrier moisturizer.
-
Night 2: Retinoid Signaling Night Cleanse, allow skin to dry, apply a pea-sized drop of retinoid across the entire face (avoiding eyelids and lip corners), and seal with moisturizer.
-
Nights 3 & 4: Dedicated Barrier Recovery Zero exfoliants and zero retinoids. Cleanse gently and apply humectants, ceramides, squalane, or panthenol on damp skin.
